This is the British edition of "Notes from a Larder." I would not have purchased it had I known that, as I had already bought "Notes from a Larder." Still, it is a very fine work. Slater does not so much present recipes (though the book contains plenty of them) as convey an attitude toward food that leads him to use ingredients in creative ways as they become available. Furthermore, he is an unfailingly interesting writer. Reading him is like visiting with a cooking friend. I recommend this, but if you are American, you may prefer to get "Notes from a Larder" as the measurements in the British edition are metric. On the other hand, if you like to weigh ingredients, as I do, this may be the choice for you.Nigel writes in such an interesting way that he enthuses me to experiment with new recipes. The ones I've tried from this book have been gorgeous especially the Risotto with smoked Haddock and Leek and Cheese Patties. I've just ordered another of his books too.Nigel Slater is the best! Great recipes and a lovely cozy read, whether you cook his recipes or not.I have an entire Nigel Slater section of my library!Love this cookbook and have already made a few meals from it. Nigel Slater is amazing cook and write he tells a story that you can't wait to join in.This is good for its recipes and for its readerly ability. It is great in the kitchen and at the bedside table. Food porn-like pictures- caution!- you might want to lick the page.ExcelentThis book showcases Nigel's beautiful writing about food and would be a joy to read for that alone. There is a particularly lovely section describing his choice of wood for a new kitchen table - the food part is relegated to just a few lines at the end of the entry. But of course his musings on food are accompanied by recipes. In anticipation of the imminent arrival of Seville oranges I have been looking today at Nigel's marmalade recipe. It is different to my usual recipe but I am going to try his method this year. Picking another page at random, he describes walking to Bermondsey market on a Saturday morning in May where he finds young carrots which he prepares in a herb sauce. Just reading the words makes me long for the days when young carrots appear. I have also just read the recipe for spiced bread & butter pudding with fried bananas which I'll be cooking this evening to use up some left over bread and bananas. Then there is blackberry ice cream cake; broad bean, feta & spinach pie; mozzarella salad with tomato crumbs (a sort of pizza without the pastry base); orange & lemon parfait; passion fruit creams. It is a bit like being a child in a sweetshop working out what to try next. There is something very comforting about Nigel's approach to food - good ingredients, simply cooked to bring out the best in their flavour. Just wonderful.Although it's much more than a cookbook! Virtually every time I see Nigel Slater on TV I come away with at least one new recipe that becomes a favourite. I don't usually bother with cookery books these days, as most recipes can be found on the internet but I felt that having this one to hand would be inspiring and I was right. It is a really beautiful book and as others have said is a book to be read and savoured, not just in the kitchen.I really feel that whenever I am stuck with a few odd bits in the fridge I will find something in this book that will produce a great meal. It arrived just as I was putting in an online order to Ocado and I ended up ordering lots of little store cupboard items to ensure I could make any of the recipes! However the real beauty of Nigel Slater's style is that you can just get the inspiration and then adapt to what you have to hand. I was very pleased with the price as well for such a lovely book.I bought this as a gift for my brother in law who is a huge fan of Nigel Slater and enjoys cooking, the book was extremely well received and I got to pick out which recipe my brother in law would try first! This is a really well put together book, nice and weighty and filled with delicious looking recipes, I'm thinking of buying a copy for my husband too! Also a great price for a book filled with so many great recipes! I definitely recommend this for your kitchen shelf!I was a little disappointed by the second volume of kitchen diaries. It isn't quite such a good read as the first and I find it less inspirational. That said, if I'd not read the first I'd probably have been more impressed. It seemed to have less pictures of the finished food than the first and the index is not the most useful I've ever used. All that said, I still think that Nigel Slater is one of the very best cookery authors and this book is still better than most authors' offerings. This is probably the 3rd book I have bought in used condition from World Books. The condition is very good as described - can't have been used a lot. I have a lot of cookery books but can never resist buying another!
