This is a book that has evoked many personal memories; a close family member also raised an intellectually and physically disabled child and this story accurately describes the various struggles a family might go through. A gritty and realistic tale, honest and unsparing in detail, so convincingly portrays the sadly, common attitudes of friends and family toward such a situation.Central to the story are the mice and rats, constantly invading Anna's kitchen, perhaps a metaphor for the things in life that can nibble away at our sanity, our conscience, even our humanity. The characters are convincingly drawn and believable and the descriptions of the French countryside beautiful and evocative. The scenes of preserving the season's fruit called forth fond memories of my own childhood when such things were done.I would heartily recommend this book to all readers and would love to see it as a required reading text in high schools and universities because this is a subject that is not talked about much....and needs to be.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will certainly, in time, read it again.
