It all began with a conversation about Harry Nilsson in the small hours of the morning. As members of The Geyer Street Sheiks, a band known around the Midwest for it's imaginative repertoire, Tom Hall and Alice Spencer thought they had exploited every musical genre imaginable. Discovering their mutual love of Nilsson freed them to delve deeper into the music that had influenced them before meeting. They began performing as T&a with a weekly residency at a bar called Molly's in Soulard, in St. Louis. After a brief 20 year hiatus, the duo began performing again in February of 2013. Their music easily rambles through a landscape that includes original material, blues, folk, and songs reaching back to the early 1900's that never made it to the mainstream. Tom Hall expresses a complex array of emotions through his National Reso-phonic guitar. It's haunting and full of sorrow or percussive and jubilant. His singing voice grumbles like a freight train in a low, steady tone that lulls and calls to the listener. Alice's voice is rich - at times it is pure and then turns and becomes raspy with emotion as it plays with the melody. Their live show is relaxed and tinged with humor. They often jump before the net has appeared and somehow, it works for T&a. The experience created by the merging of these unique voices, personalities, and Tom's singular guitar work punctuated by the occasional wink of the ukulele is...well, there's just something to it.
