I was introduced to Ms John by way of the Stax-Volt Box vol 1. I was familiar with all the known stars like Otis, Rufas, Eddie Floyd, Johhny Taylor, Sam & Dave & Carla. My ears truly perked up when I heard Mables songs (7-8 are on the box set).So I figured I test out "Stay Out of the Kitchen" and very glad that I did. Only 1 tune from the box set made it on to this release & the other songs are very strong material indeed. I have NO idea why Mable never made it big like some of the other artists but file that under life aint fair I guess.This stuff is true blue gut bucket soul & she is backed by Booker T & MG's. This is a very worthy addition to any soul collection that I would call "essential".It must run in the family because it is no surprise when I learned that she is Little Willy John's kid sister & she pay's beautifal homage to him on the closing # "Need Your Love so Bad"....Highly recommended.
