I had originally bought this book because a college professor of mine had really recommended it and found the overall advice in the book to be helpful. Knowing that he gives marital counseling himself, I knew that I had to check it out and see if it would help me and my boyfriend out. We ended up reading chapters of it to each other at night in bed. Now we have yet to finish the entire book (although it is a fairly short book), but I'll be totally honest, we forgot about continuing to read through it! Not the books fault though! I can't speak for my boyfriend, because it's been a while since we had talked about the book personally, but I think that it gave me a good deal of insight about the different dynamic that couples tend to display.I do happen to have a degree in psychology myself (a bachelors, nothing crazy), and I found the book thus far to be helpful and very interesting, but not completely new to me personally. There is a great deal of overlap in between the things I have heard and learned in my psychology classes, but I found this to be a good companion (no pun intended) to my psych courses, and a way to share it with my boyfriend and give us both an outlet to talk about our feelings and to ask each-other about each chapter. In summary, if you are already a psychology major and have taken marriage and family type courses, you might not get a lot of new information from this book, but it is a fun one to read and share with your spouse or significant other, and it's one that I'd like to reference and come back to.
